Ai Weiwei

Chinese, b. 1957

Born in Beijing in 1957, Ai Weiwei works across sculpture, installation, photography, film and architecture, often using mass-produced materials, salvaged wood, porcelain and large numbers of collaborators. His projects address human rights and freedom of expression, frequently drawing on documentary research. The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden presented Ai Weiwei: According to What?, described as his first major United States retrospective, in 2012, and showed the installation Trace in 2017-18. He was elected an Honorary Royal Academician in 2011, and the Royal Academy of Arts in London devoted an exhibition to his work in 2015.
