Arman

French-American, 1928-2005

Arman (Armand Fernandez) was born in Nice, France, on November 17, 1928, and died on October 22, 2005. He moved from using objects for the ink and paint traces they leave, in the cachets and allures d'objet, to using the objects themselves, becoming known for his Accumulations of found, like items and for works involving the destruction and recomposition of objects. A prominent member of the Nouveaux Réalistes in the 1960s, he relocated to New York in 1973 and took United States citizenship while retaining French nationality. Retrospectives were held at the Walker Art Center in 1964 and at the Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain, Nice, in 2004.
