Banksy

British, active from the 1990s; birth date undisclosed

Banksy is an anonymous British artist whose work first appeared in Bristol, England, in the 1990s; his identity has never been confirmed and interviews have been conducted by email or altered voice recording. He came to attention as a freehand graffiti artist in 1993 and adopted stencils in 2000 for speed, developing a recognisable repertoire of rats, policemen and other figures across graffiti, installation and performance. Exhibitions include Turf War (2003) and Crude Oils (2005) in London. Bristol Museum & Art Gallery staged Banksy versus Bristol Museum in 2009, showing more than a hundred works, and displays pieces he has given the museum.
