Chris Ofili

British, b. 1968

Chris Ofili was born in Manchester in 1968 and studied at Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art, London; a travelling scholarship to Zimbabwe in 1992 shaped his approach to painting. His densely layered canvases combine oil paint, resin, glitter, map pins, magazine cut-outs and elephant dung, and address black identity and experience, often turning racial stereotypes against themselves. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1998 and represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2003. Tate holds works including the installation The Upper Room (1999-2002) and presented a survey at Tate Britain in 2010.
