Artists

Christo and Jeanne-Claude

Christo, 1935-2020; Jeanne-Claude, 1935-2009

Christo (Christo Javacheff), born in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, on June 13, 1935, and Jeanne-Claude (Jeanne-Claude de Guillebon), born in Casablanca, Morocco, on the same day, worked together on temporary environmental projects that used large expanses of fabric and other materials in outdoor and urban settings. Their projects required years of planning, permits and environmental studies, and were financed by the artists through the sale of preparatory studies. Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin, was realized between 1971 and 1995, and The Gates, comprising 7,500 fabric-hung gates in Central Park, was installed in New York in February 2005. Jeanne-Claude died in New York in 2009; Christo died there in 2020.
