Clarence James

Clarence James was born January 11, 1991 in Stamford, Connecticut, and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. He graduated from Howard University in 2014 and began exhibiting immediately afterward. First active as a street artist in Washington and New York, he now paints on canvas, combining painting, drawing and mixed media in work he frames as an act of resistance and self-definition. He works from 52 O Street Studios in Washington, D.C., has painted murals at Art Basel Miami and in D.C. public schools, and held a solo show at The National Arts Club, New York, in December 2022.
