Damien Hirst

British, b. 1965

Damien Hirst was born in Bristol in 1965 and works in painting, sculpture, installation and photography. His practice centres on birth, illness, death and religion, and includes vitrines holding animals preserved in formaldehyde, the spot paintings, and cabinets arranged with pills and medicine bottles. He was central to the Young British Artists, whose work dominated the British art scene of the 1990s, both as an artist and as a curator. Tate holds works including Away from the Flock (1994) and With Dead Head (1991), and the ARTIST ROOMS collection contains eight works spanning his career.
