François-Xavier Lalanne was a French sculptor who lived from 1927 to 2008. He made streamlined animal-shaped sculptures and functional objects, including desks, chairs, bars and vases, in which abstracted forms often conceal a practical use, drawing on nature and an interest in the inner life of animals. He showed the first of his large-scale metal rhinoceros sculptures at Zoophites, Galerie J, Paris, in 1964, and the first of his Moutons de Laine flocks in 1966. He exhibited with his wife, Claude Lalanne, under the name Les Lalanne; the Clark Art Institute presented Claude & François-Xavier Lalanne: Nature Transformed in 2021.
