Gavin Rain was born on 23 March 1971 in Cape Town, where he grew up. He studied art at the University of Cape Town, majoring in neuropsychology, and at the Ruth Prowse Art School in Woodstock. Working primarily in acrylic, he arrived at his neo-pointillist method around 2004, building portraits from rows of concentric dots that resolve only at a distance and evoke the grid of a screen. He took part in the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011 and the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013 with the Bangladesh Pavilion.
