Henry Moore

Henry Spencer Moore was born in Castleford, Yorkshire, on 30 July 1898 and died on 31 August 1986. A sculptor and draftsman, he carved directly in stone and wood, modelled in clay and plaster, and cast in bronze and lead, exploring opened-out and pierced forms, the relationship of mass to void, and the reclining figure, alongside drawings that include his wartime shelter and coal-mining subjects. He was awarded the sculpture prize at the 1948 Venice Biennale and the International Sculpture Prize at the 1953 São Paulo Bienal. Works including Two Standing Figures (1963) are held by Tate.
