Hiroshi Sugimoto

Hiroshi Sugimoto was born in Tokyo in 1948 and works primarily in black-and-white photography, printing in gelatin silver. Since 1980 he has travelled to remote coastlines for the Seascapes, in which the horizon precisely bisects the frame and attention falls on regional differences of light and atmosphere. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes his work as combining conceptual and perceptual richness, exacting craftsmanship and minimalism, with reference to twelfth-century Japanese painting. The museum holds seascapes including Boden Sea, Uttwil, and his photographs are also represented in the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
