Invader

French, b. 1969

Invader is the pseudonym of a French artist born near Paris in 1969 who appears publicly only masked and describes himself as an Unidentified Free Artist. Since 1998 he has pursued the Space Invaders project, cementing mosaics of small ceramic tiles to walls, tunnels, metro stations and monuments, mostly without authorisation; by September 2024 more than four thousand mosaics had been installed in some eighty cities. The imagery derives from the 1978 arcade game Space Invaders and other pixel sources. He also makes portraits from Rubik's cubes, a practice he calls Rubikcubism, alongside paintings, films and editions.
