James Barnor

James Barnor was born in Ghana on 6 June 1929 and works in studio portraiture and photojournalism across six decades in Accra and London. He opened the Ever Young studio in Accra in the early 1950s, became Ghana's first full-time newspaper photographer, and photographed the country as it approached independence. Moving to London in 1959, he made assignments for the South African magazine Drum, then returned to Ghana in the early 1970s and established its first colour processing laboratory. Tate holds his photographs, and Serpentine Galleries presented the retrospective James Barnor: Accra/London.
