James Grashow was born in Brooklyn in 1942 and lived and worked in Redding, Connecticut, until his death in 2025. He earned a BFA and MFA from Pratt Institute and held a Fulbright travel grant to Florence. Working principally in corrugated cardboard and woodcut, he built large-scale installations of cities, fountains and menageries. His monumental cardboard fountain, made after Bernini's Trevi Fountain and left to decay outdoors, is the subject of the 2012 documentary The Cardboard Bernini. His work was shown at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, the deCordova, and the Taubman Museum of Art.
