James Verbicky was born in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1973, spent much of his early life in British Columbia, and moved to the United States in the early 2000s. Self-taught, he lives and works in Southern California. He is known for his media paintings: densely layered, sculptural assemblages built from vintage magazines, advertisements and printed matter, which address a society saturated by media. His later ERA and Bhavanga series return to hand-painted canvas with enamel script and textured surfaces. In 2008 his work was included in the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts juried exhibition at the Carrousel du Louvre, Paris.
