Jean-Michel Basquiat was born in Brooklyn, New York, on 22 December 1960 to a Haitian father and a Puerto Rican mother, and died in 1988 at the age of twenty-seven. In the late 1970s he wrote cryptic phrases across downtown Manhattan as half of the graffiti duo SAMO with Al Diaz, then moved to painting and drawing, using paint sticks, text, crowns and anatomical fragments to combine social commentary with references to his Caribbean heritage. He is identified with Neo-expressionism. His work is held by the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Brooklyn Museum organised a retrospective of more than one hundred of his works.
