Joan Miró

Joan Miró was born in Barcelona on April 20, 1893, into a family of watchmakers, studied with Francesc Galí from 1912 to 1915, and first traveled to Paris in 1920; he died on December 25, 1983. A Catalan modernist, he worked in painting, gouache, pastel, printmaking, collage, ceramics, sculpture, tapestry and murals, incorporating found materials and drawing on dreams, the unconscious and automatism, though he considered his art free of any "ism" despite being widely grouped with Surrealism. He settled in Palma de Mallorca after the Second World War, and the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró opened there in 1981.
