John Chamberlain was born in Rochester, Indiana, on April 16, 1927, and died in New York on December 21, 2011. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago in 1951-52 and studied and taught sculpture at Black Mountain College in 1955 and 1956, beginning with flat welded sculptures influenced by David Smith. From 1959 he concentrated on sculpture built entirely from welded parts of crushed automobiles, later working with urethane foam, heat-crumpled Plexiglas, automobile spray paint and large-scale photography. His ten-part sculpture The Privet (1997) is in the collection of the Dia Art Foundation.
