Julio Le Parc

Argentine, 1928-2026

Julio Le Parc was born on 23 September 1928 in Palmira, near Mendoza, Argentina, and died on 30 May 2026 at the age of ninety-seven. After moving to Paris he made the black-and-white Surfaces paintings from 1958 and then the illuminated mobiles, reflective reliefs and labyrinths for which he is known, work that required the viewer's movement and participation. In 1960 he co-founded the Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel (GRAV) in Paris. Tate Modern opened an exhibition of his work, developed with the artist, in its George Economou Gallery in June 2026.
