KAWS

American, b. 1974

KAWS is the name used by Brian Donnelly, born in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1974 and based in Brooklyn, New York. His practice began with graffiti drawing and altered bus shelter and telephone booth advertisements, and now extends to paintings, murals, monumental sculptures, inflatables, furniture, toys, animation and augmented reality works, built around recurring characters such as COMPANION. The work appropriates and abstracts figures from American cartoons and addresses friendship, loneliness and isolation while operating between art, design and commerce. The Brooklyn Museum presented the survey KAWS: WHAT PARTY, with more than one hundred works, in 2021.
