Kim Yong-Ik

Korean, b. 1947

Kim Yong-Ik was born in Seoul in 1947 and lives in Yangpyeong, South Korea. He studied in the oil painting department at Hongik University under Park Seo-Bo, completing an MFA in 1980, and his early airbrushed Plane Object works, made on unstretched cloth hung directly on the wall, relate to Dansaekhwa. He later developed dot paintings and works that incorporate their own crates and wrappings, using painting and drawing to question the relationship between the avant-garde, society and art institutions. He is a founding member of Art Space Pool, Seoul, and held a solo exhibition at Spike Island, Bristol.
