Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall was born in Vitebsk in 1887 and died in 1985. Russian-born and long resident in France, he worked as a painter, lithographer, etcher and designer, and his work was somewhat influenced by Cubism while differing from it in its love of fantasy, with recurring imagery of lovers, circus performers, animals and village life. His first one-man exhibition was held at the Galerie Der Sturm, Berlin, in 1914. Tate holds a group of his works, including The Poet Reclining (1915), The Green Donkey (1911) and The Blue Circus (1950).
