Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga, Spain, in 1881 and died in 1973, leaving an output of more than twenty thousand paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, and theater sets and costumes. He studied briefly in Madrid in 1897 and Barcelona in 1899, and his work moved through the Blue and Rose periods, Cubism in its analytic and synthetic phases, papier collé, a neoclassical period in the early 1920s, and later engagement with Surrealist imagery. Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), which signaled the nascent stages of Cubism, is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
