Houben Tcherkelov, who works as Houben R.T., was born January 23, 1970 in Kardzhali, Bulgaria, and lives and works in New York. He studied painting at the National Academy of Art in Sofia and in 1995 studied impasto painting with Jorg Immendorff in Amsterdam. Beginning with photography, film and installation concerned with post-communist society, he now paints enlarged images drawn from American and other national currencies, using impasto, glaze, foil, acrylic and watercolour to examine how symbolic images legitimise national power. He represented Bulgaria at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011.
