Richard Prince

Richard Prince, born in 1949, is an American artist associated with both Conceptual and Pop practices who came to prominence in the East Village art scene of the 1980s. Working through rephotography and appropriation, he has taken images of models, advertising, furniture, watches and jewellery from American commercial culture and re-presented them as his own, a practice that questions authorship and the imagery of consumer publicity. The Whitney Museum of American Art, which holds his work and gave him an exhibition in 1992, records subsequent surveys at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1993 and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2007.
