Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Fox Lichtenstein was born in New York City on October 27, 1923, and died there on September 29, 1997. Identified with Pop art, a movement he helped originate, he based his early mature paintings on comic-strip and advertising imagery rendered in a style that mimicked the crude printing processes of newspaper reproduction, adopting the Benday dot as a signature device and later treating the brushstroke itself as subject. He worked in series, producing more than five thousand objects. His comic-book paintings were first shown at the Leo Castelli Gallery in 1962, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum held his first New York retrospective in 1969.
