Takashi Murakami was born in Tokyo in 1962 and received the first doctorate in Nihonga, or Japanese painting, awarded by the Tokyo University of the Arts. His paintings and sculptures bring together traditional Japanese pictorial conventions and Western art, together with the anime, toy and video game culture of otaku fandom, under his guiding concept of Superflat, which stresses flatness and decoration and rejects hierarchies between genres and eras. Recurring figures include Mr. DOB, created in 1994. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art holds works including Hiropon and Super Nova, and The Broad in Los Angeles maintains a rotating installation of his work.
